Benjamin Cottam
(1975- )
Lives and works in New York

Cottam's nearly complete 'Dead Artist' series features artists that have died since 1950. All portraits are approximately the same size, all set on the same size paper, floating frail images of both famous and once-famous artists. The method of the drawings, silverpoint, is itself an antiquated technique so that in both technical and conceptual terms, his project combines the nearly forgotten (or soon to be forgotten) artists with a nearly forgotten drawing technique. The subject of this portrait, Alfred Jensen, was an artist deeply interested in the inter-relatedness of Goethe's color theories, Mayan numerologies and the theories of the scientist Michael Faraday.
