Lives and works in Albany, New York
Mark Greenwold's work is marked by its
stunning virtuosity and disturbing scenes that feature himself, as
well as friends and members of his extended family, and is based
on photographs that he takes of his subject. Greenwold works and
reworks every minute detail with exacting attention, but at the same
time, he allows his mind to remain open to new ideas, symbols, and
details as he works. As a result, the work will often take a year or
more to complete because he is constantly revising a painting that
demands incredible attention to detail. Greenwold feels that spending
so much time on completing a painting sets him apart from most other
contemporary artists. He also thinks that spending so much time looking
at and thinking about a single work is a form of resistance against
much contemporary painting, which mostly emphasizes large scale gesture. |
