Jim Torok
(South Bend, Indiana, 1954- )
Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

Jim Torok's miniature portraits glow in a way that recalls 17th-century Flemish masters. Torok's technique lies in thinly layering oil paint with a water-color brush and employing a mix of traditional and improvised glazing strategies. Unlike other work by Torok, who frequently makes large, sarcastic caricature-based narrative works, these images are direct, unapologetic and irony-free portraits, exquisitely beautiful and sincere.
