Lives and works in Berlin-Lichtenberg
Magnus Von Plessen began painting
only in 2000, after a number of years working as a photographer and
filmmaker. While he continues to use photography as a source for
his painting, he resists straightforward mimesis, and uses the photograph
to stimulate memories of the person, event or place. As a result,
the painting is not exclusively reality-based nor exclusively
imaginary, but rather a combination of both. Self-Portrait
with Someone Else's Head is remarkable in that Von Plessen has taken his method
of working to an extreme, and combined the real (a portrait of himself)
with the imaginary (someone else's head attached to his body). |
